Crushed And Reused

Hartford concrete crushing that stays on site

Broken slabs, footings and hardstanding processed on site into graded granular fill. Reinforcement is separated for recycling and the product goes back into the ground rather than onto a lorry.

The Arithmetic

Crushing pays when the volume is there

Crushing on site removes two costs at once: the weight going out as waste and the stone coming in as fill. On a large slab or a full lot scrape that is a substantial saving, and the crushed product is a perfectly good sub-base for what follows.

On a small job it is not, because mobilising a crusher has a fixed cost that a couple of lorry loads will never recover. There also has to be somewhere to sit it, somewhere to stockpile, and neighbours who can live with a noisy few days.

We do the arithmetic at survey and tell you which side of the line your job falls, including when the answer is that it is not worth it. Material comes from slab removal and foundation breaking, and the product goes back in under grading and backfill.

How It Runs

Four stages, priced before stage two

  1. Assess the volume

Does the tonnage justify mobilising a crusher.

  2. Set up and screen

    Crusher sited, stockpile areas agreed.

  3. Separate the steel

    Reinforcement pulled out for recycling.

  4. Grade and reuse

Product graded and placed as fill.

Noise And Dust

A crusher is noisy and dusty, so plan it

Crushing is the loudest thing that will happen on most sites and it produces dust that carries further than the boundary if it is not managed. Water suppression at the crusher, sensible siting away from the nearest windows and working within agreed hours are what keep it acceptable, and telling the neighbours before it starts rather than after is worth more than any of them.

On urban sites the practical window is often narrower than the crushing itself needs, which is part of the arithmetic and a reason it sometimes loses to simply hauling the material out. We say which we think applies to your site and why.

Anything that does leave is weighed under disposal and recycling, transport under debris hauling, and the wider scope under site work.

Straight Answers

Hartford concrete crushing questions, answered

When the tonnage is large enough to cover mobilising the crusher and there is room to site it. On a small domestic job it usually is not, and we will say so.
Graded properly it makes a sound granular sub-base for drives, slabs and hardstanding. Where an engineer has specified imported stone we follow the specification instead.
It is the loudest part of the job. Siting, water suppression and agreed hours make it manageable, and telling the neighbours in advance makes more difference than any of it.
Pulled out and sent for recycling rather than left in the crushed material. It has scrap value and it would compromise the fill if it stayed.
For a typical house-sized volume, one to three days once the material is broken out and stockpiled. The breaking usually takes longer than the crushing.

They told me on day one that the gas cap would take six weeks, not the demolition. That was the whole schedule and they were right.

Quoted a full removal rather than a partial fill, and explained why the cheaper option would show up on a survey later.

The asbestos survey came back positive on the floor tile. They stopped, abated it, gave me the paperwork, then carried on.

Lot was swept and the debris weighed out with a recycling breakdown. Neighbours never complained once about dust.
